5 Tools for When Your Little One Gets Sick

5 Tools for When Your Little One Gets Sick

In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful

I hope you are having a beautiful Ramadan so far! Today we’re talking about tools of healing for Muslim moms. All of us, young and old, fall ill every so often…and having some tools in our back pocket is always handy. We know some medications, maybe we even know some vitamins but here are 5 healing tools that we don’t talk about quite as often.

So without further ado, let’s talk about those tools for healing…

1. Du’a

Some people might be thinking ‘of course’…but in the moment, most of us have a tendency to view du’a as either a last resort or like an extra. With that said, though it might be mundane, I think it is definitely worth mentioning. Allah is the Healer and without Him, there is no healing. When our child falls ill, du’a should be a priority. We make du’a for our child and we encourage them to make du’a for themselves.

2. Surah al-Fatiha

This is going to be short and sweet because I’m not going to go into a lot of details here.  I’m not a religious scholar or anything of that nature and I think this is something we each need to learn about, figure out and decide for ourselves… But I want to mention it here because Surah al-Fatiha is a powerful tool for healing. It is authentically mentioned and highly underused.

3. Sunshine and fresh air

I think a lot of times when our kiddos get sick, we think we should keep them inside, in their beds and getting some rest. But fresh air and sunshine can be very healing. It’s not about pushing your child to be up and running around necessarily. Also, we don’t want to take them to the playground or public places, etc. Simply being outside, taking some breaths, feeling the air and natural light can make a big difference when someone is sick.

4. Blackseed oil (and raw/local honey)

We learn that there is healing from blackseed…for everything except old age and death. There is the actual seed of course but there’s also blackseed oil. It can be used internally and externally. When my son has a cough/phlegm situation going on, I also rub blackseed oil on his chest, his upper back and the bottoms of his feet. It does have a VERY strong taste, so if you’re using it for a toddler or very small child, you want to use only a tiny amount. Honey that is local, and even better raw, is healing in itself and can definitely make the blackseed more palatable. Of course, be mindful of the age frame..as honey is not recommended for littles under two.

5. Elderberry syrup

Elderberry is a powerhouse for building immunity. Elderberry syrup is a great way to get the benefits of the elderberry – including the high level of vitamin c – in a sweet and delightful way. I put some in almond milk…it tastes like blueberry milk. Elderberry gummies are also a thing. Children love them. You can even make it at home if you’re inclined. Ideally you’re being proactive with this, building up the immune system.

These are five tools that can be used as a means of healing for ourselves and our children. I talked previously about using elderberry syrup and blackseed oil when I talked about our favorite wellness tools for the cold/flu seasons. But I really wanted to hone in on these 5, especially using Du’a and al-Fatiha, as a means of helping our children get better when they are feeling sick.

A lot of times, as moms, when our children aren’t well, we feel the weight of that on our heart…and of course we want to do everything in our power to help our little one’s get well. So I want to encourage us to lean into that and make relying on Allah a bigger part of that.

Question for the comments: Are any of these your go-to already? Which of these 5 tools will you be adding to your back pocket?
