7 Sunnahs to Teach Your 4 Year Old to Prepare for Jumuah

In The name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful

Today, we’re talking about seven simple Sunnahs we can teach our little ones to do to take advantage of the blessings of Jumuah. We’ve talked before about some Sunnahs we can teach our babies and toddlers..and though these can and should be started early on as well – these are a bit more geared toward 3 years and up, as they’re gaining more independence and being a little more intentional about being their own little person.

1.Take a shower/make ghusl.

The sunnah is to specifically make ghusl for Jumuah. However, for small kiddos, just getting them into the habit of taking a bath/shower for Jumuah is a great start. And in this, it’s a great opportunity to teach them how to make wudhu and ghusl.

2. Clip your nails.

It is sunnah to clip your nails every week. When your kiddo is small, you’ll be clipping their nails. Make it a habit to do on the day of Jumuah. It’s a tiny shift that can make such a mundane task into something full of reward. You’re instilling in them this simple Sunnah that can stick with them for a lifetime.

3. Apply Oud/oil.

As a mom to a little boy and knowing that Jumuah is an obligation for men, I write this with those things in mind. A lot of things in this post apply to both girls and boys alike but this one is specifically for the boys. It should preferably be something like Oud or similar, not cologne or perfume. This is a Sunnah for Jumuah. My son tends to try to go overboard when I let him put oil on so he’s only allowed to use it on special occasions, such as Jumuah.

4. Wear nice clothes.

We should always dress decently of course but on Jumuah, we should dress up. It is from the sunnah to wear your best clothes. Don’t go overboard because that’s not part of the sunnah…but help your little one to intentionally put a little more care into what they’re wearing for Jumuah.

5. Read/Listen to a portion of Surah al-Kahf.

This surah is a bit long for a small child if it’s not a habit already…but you don’t have to start with the whole surah. Listen or read together the first 10 ayahs for a while…and as you see the habit sticking, add another 10 until your family is getting through the whole Surah. Also, in the beginning, it might be helpful to give them a quiet activity (such as a puzzle or paper and colors) to do as they listen.

6. Go a little early for Jumuah prayer.

Firstly, don’t hesitate to take your small kids to the masjid. If you want their hearts to be attached, they have to build a connection. Children belong in the masjid too! Get there early enough that you are sitting when they begin the Adhaan. You want your child to learn the importance and the sanctity of Jumuah. Be on time.

7. Listen quietly to the Khutba.

I’m a person at the masjid who loves to hear the children. I love to see their smiles and hear their giggles. The children running through the lines. It truly brings my heart joy. However, as our children are growing, there are times, we must slowly teach them are quiet times. It’s not time to play. During the khutba is one of those times. Start small, stay consistent. Be patient and remember part of how we teach our children is through our own etiquette.

I really love sharing simple Sunnahs we can teach our children and it seems a lot of you enjoy it as well. It’s a win-win for the entire family. As we’re trying to encourage our children, sometimes we learn new things and pick up good habits for ourselves. Also, when we take the time and effort to slowly build this connection, love and following of our prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, in our children – into their daily lives – as they’re earning rewards, so are we God willing.
