7 Transformative Self-Care Practices That Are so Easy You Can Start Today

In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful

We become what we do consistently. All the little things that are a part of our everyday routines contribute to our identity – how we see ourselves and how others see us. This is why it is so important that we are consistently checking in and making sure that our daily routines and habits are in line with who we want to be.

While it’s so easy for us these days, to watch Youtube videos or look at other people on social media platforms and try to follow what everyone else might be doing, it is really important that we take those ideas with a grain of salt. We have to be sure that we are only taking up practices that are actually moving us forward in our desired direction. Something might be crucial for one person and detrimental for you.

With less than a month left in this year, it’s a perfect time to sit down and do a bit of a reset. Check in with yourself. Are there any habits or routines that you tried this year but have realized they are not doing you any good? What about some habits you’d like to try to incorporate next year? Look at your goals and see what daily practices you must take up to help you achieve those goals.

I’m sure we all have a couple of new daily practices we want to incorporate into our lives this coming year! With that said, I wanted to share 7 simple practices you can add to your daily routine that are nourishing and can literally transform your physical and emotional health.

1. Drink more water.

Everyone talks about this but this is an issue for a lot of us! We have to drink more water. It’s for our physical health – keeping our skin, organs and overall body hydrated, keeps everything moving the way it’s supposed to (our blood, urine, bowels), and it purifies our body. Beyond our physical body, when we’re not hydrated properly, we become sluggish. Our energy is impacted and so is our mood.

2. Take your supplements.

There are many contributing factors but the truth is, most of us are missing some very important nutrients! I personally believe that it is very possible to get all the nutrients we need without taking vitamins…however it does take a good amount of time and tends to be a little more expensive. My family and I do use vitamins but I’m careful to choose food-sourced brands as often as I’m able. Some other things that are good to supplement with are adding fish oil to your diet, taking blackseed oil, using local honey and making use of herbal teas. There’s also sea moss… Beyond that, there are things such as hemp seeds, chia seeds and flax seeds that pack a great nutritional punch! It is important to find out what your body needs and make sure you’re getting it!

3. Clean and moisturize your face.

Our face is a delicate area of skin. We have to take time to take care of it. Whether you use makeup or not, it is important that you clean your face each day and moisturize it. A favorite way I use to clean my face is to simply use coconut oil…and moisturize with a tiny bit as well. I also use a nice organic facial cleanser from time-to-time and a facial moisturizer. I like both ways and both ways work just fine. No matter how you do it, take care of your face (and your skin in general really) and make sure you use natural products.

4. Cut back on carbs.

There are plenty of healthy carbs – bananas, potatoes, natural honey and more. Within moderation these carbs are fine for most people and part of a healthy diet. But there are also carbs that are simply fillers in our diet, that are not only not contributing to our nutrition, they are actually causing inflammation in our body. A simple way (although hard) to get started with this is to cut out processed carbs – all of those snacks and cakes and pre-packaged foods. You’ll notice less bloating, improved energy and you’ll have a great opportunity to bring creativity into your kitchen.

5. Chart your cycle.

We just talked about this last week, so I can’t leave this one out! I am just getting started with charting my cycle and it is quite transformative. Taking the time to check-in with your individual body on such an intimate level. It only requires a small investment (mostly of your time) and in return, it provides valuable insight into your reproductive wellness and your overall health.

6. Create moments of movements.

I love doing things outdoors. I like biking, hiking, sailing, gardening… I enjoy being able to enjoy the beauty of Allah’s creation. But if I were to consider those things only as a form of exercise, I know that I’d be much less inclined toward them. My point is, it is crucial that you get your body up and moving throughout the day – everyday! But you don’t have to make a concerted effort to do that. Find some things you enjoy – whether it’s yoga, walking around your neighborhood, dancing, kayaking or HIIT workouts. Do things that you love, whatever it might be but make sure you are adding moments of movement into your daily routine!

7. Make and use affirmations.

This is another tool of self-care we’ve talked about before! Affirmations are as powerful as you choose to make them. They are words that you choose and you are the one that gives those words power…by choosing to say them intentionally, frequently and sincerely. Adding affirmations to your daily routine is a great way to take care of ourselves and they help us to take back ownership over our situation, our environment and ourselves.

Our habits can make or break us. It’s up to us, whether we choose to take control over these small but informative actions throughout our everyday lives. All 7 of these self-care practices are simple and require little investment. However, if we gather our discipline and determination, these habits, over time, will help us to transform our health and well-being. I’d love to hear some of your suggestions for small but powerful daily habits.

Question for the comments: What is one habit you have added to your daily routine this year?
